What windows qualify?

Qualify windows must have both a U-Value and Solar Heat Gain Coeffiecent (SHGC) equal to or below 0.30.

What is a U-Value and SHGC and how will I know what windows meet the requirements?

The government has done all of the work for you! The National Fenestration Rating Council, a government program, requires labels to be put on all windows when they leave the manufacturing plant. On the label contains both U-Value and SHGC numbers. The lower the number, the better the window, it is just that simple.

The American Architectural Manufacturer's Association is an institution that certifies products after they are confirmed by third-party testing labs to meet industry standards. AAMA sets the rules for testing the performance of building products like windows. Among the most important of these measurements are air infiltration, water leakage, and structural window performance. AAMA also certifies window installers

All ENERGY STAR qualified windows must be NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) rated, certified and labeled for both U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain. The U.S. Department of Energy offers a comprehensive guide to the selection process for windows based upon energy efficiency.
